Becoming a Driving Instructor

Many people find becoming an ADI (approved driving instructor) a rewarding career, and you’ll find the job particularly enjoyable if you are a people person and like helping others learn new skills.

Legal Requirements and Qualification Process

The first step to becoming an ADI is checking that you meet all of the necessary requirements outlined by the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency). In order to begin your driver instructor training, you’ll have to have held a full UK or European Union driving licence for four of the past six years, and not been disqualified from driving for four years before the start of your ADI training.

The ADI qualification process consists of 3 qualifying tests that will assess your knowledge of driving theory, your driving ability, and your instructional ability. We aim to have you successfully passing the 1st and 2nd exams within 3 months. During this 3 months we will also be working towards the 3rd part of the qualifying exam. This will include 40 hours of specialist training towards the final exam. Once you have passed the 1st and 2nd exams and completed the 40 hours of training towards the 3rd exam you to have the option of a ‘Trainee Licence’ which enables you to earn whilst teaching real pupils and gaining experience for your final exam.
